The
Brewster Grist Mill
Item # 206
Watercolor

|
| Details |
| Location: |
Brewster,
Cape Cod, MA |
| Description: |
Corn
is still being ground at the Stony Brook Mill site, one of the
few active waterwheel-driven mills still in operation. The present
mill was built in 1874 on the foundation of an earlier one.
Once called Factory Village, the area around the Grist Mill
used to be an industrial center including a tannery and a fulling
mill where woolen cloth was thickened and stretched.
When water power was king, New England thrived. Mills appeared
wherever watercourses fell with enough force to turn heavy grindstones,
sawblades, or manufacturing machinery. This mill, at Cape Cod's
Town of Brewster, was for years the center of a thriving little
industrial village turning out everything from overalls to ice
cream. Today, only the mill remains, captivating visitors with
the shady walks and quiet ponds.
In the
spring, when millions of herring return from the sea to spawn,
the noise of happy children almost equals the screaming of
the gulls that arrive for their dinners of herring alfresco.
