Cohasset
Common
Item # 30
Watercolor

|
| Details |
| Location: |
Cohasset,
MA |
| Description: |
Although
many New England towns have replaced the commons obliterated
by growth, the Cohasset Common is an original. This painting
captures three of its best-loved buildings, the Unitarian Church
(the First Parish), the Second Congregational Church, and the
Town Hall.
Because of these buildings and the Common's other examples of
Georgian, Greek Revival, and Second Empire styles, Cohasset
is on the National Register of Historic Places. Settled in the
1670s, the area was part of Hingham until 1770, after which
it became Cohasset. A fishing and shipbuilding town, Cohasset
retained its seaward orientation until late in the 19th century
when its scenic waterfront and proximity to Boston made it a
prime residential community as well. |
