Item # 31
Watercolor

| Details |
| Location: |
Brewster,
Cape Cod, MA |
| Description: |
Corn
is still being ground at the Stony Brook Mill site, one of the
few active waterwheel-driven mills still in operation. The present
mill was built in 1874 on the foundation of an earlier one.
Once called Factory Village, the area around the Grist Mill
used to be an industrial center including a tannery and a fulling
mill where woolen cloth was thickened and stretched.
Today the mill, with its seasonal herring run, is a popular
tourist attraction. Each spring the herring (alewives) come
in from the ocean and climb the specially constructed "ladder"
to spawn in the freshwater ponds. Those that survive return
to the ocean, while the young ones leave a few months later.
Living nearby, Karen has painted the mill in all seasons and
she particularly enjoys the coming of spring when this beautiful
part of Cape Cod comes to life. |
