There
are many places on Cape Cod, particularly along its 200 miles
of seacoast, that seem to look the way they might have appeared
before the first European ever set foot on this land. And even
when the human presence is felt, it is often unobtrusive enough
to let the imagination skip back over the centuries to the time
when the land was virtually undisturbed, eagles, as well as
cougars and moose were common here, and silence reigned.
When you travel on Main street in the town of Barnstable from
the villages of Centerville to Osterville, you cross the Bumps
River.
Thomas Bumpas, grandson of Edward Bompasse, lived on Lovell's
Way, Cokachoiset (now Osterville). Samuel Bumpas' house in the
1700's was at Skonkonet near the cedar swamp on Bumps River
Road. |
