It's
something of a mystery why flowering plants do so well on this
island exposed on all sides to wild storms and salt spray. The
secret may lie in the age of many of the houses and gardens
on Nantucket, which have had plenty of time to establish themselves
since the mid-nineteenth century's heyday of whaling.
Most of
us, in this restless America of a new century, have gardens
that show more promise than performance, and we go to longer-established
places like Natucket to have our batteries recharged.
